I own Savage and Ruger in smaller calibers and Ruger's just have much smoother actions, but the price difference was also there. As to a deer caliber. It pains me to say this, because I'm a huge Savage fan, but I'd choose the Ruger American out of those two. The trigger on the Axis is horrible (the Axis II acc-trigger is much better), the bolt handle feels cheap, the stock is extra flimsy and cheap feeling, etc. The rifles shoot, but they are just very cheap feeling overall.
